Forgiving Humanity: The Curse of Exponential Change.
Paul O'Brian and Peter Russell discuss how exponential change is the result of a positive feedback loop whereby innovation breeds further innovation. While there are many causes of the global crises now facing us, and various people or institutions may be held responsible for the dangerous course humanity has taken, unrelenting exponential growth would have landed humanity in crisis whatever path we might have chosen.

Who Am I? - The Self and Variations of Ego
Переглядів 1,9 тис.6 місяців тому
Who Am I? A question central to many spiritual teachings and psychologies. And there are many ways of answering it. There is the sense of self we derive from the roles we play, and how others see us. Beneath this is as sense of self as agent, that which decides to act and carries out our actions. There is the "I" that we think thinks our thoughts. An "I" that is aware, the subject of all experi...

The term NonDuality is used in two different ways. First is the spiritual sense derived from the Indian tradition of advaita which concerns the absolute essence of all phenomena. Your world becomes what your attention is on. If your attention is in climate change then all you see are melting polar ice caps and starving polar bears. If your attention is on suffering, well then.. suffering will be your experience. We all want an end to our suffering - listening to Peter is a great way :) I say that as one who drifts in and out of suffering with regularity 😂❤

    Sadly dearest Peter, we have a tiny minority of us who are heavily invested in the denial of US denial of our ONENESS and until this insane aspect of ourselves is made aware like the villain in the pantomime where the purest of us , the children all shout from their unsullied views... ....BEHIND YOU... ...." I just came across Peter about a month ago, catching him on some 1980s youtube video and so far have read four of his books (two of them twice) and plan on reading everything he has written. I have read all the great spiritual teacher books over the years and Peter's humble wisdom is real Gold, and well worth any spiritual students time and effort. Nisargadatta, has always been my favorite but now Peter rates right up there with the best.

    Thank you, Peter! I appreciate your work, your simplicity, and your humble attitude. I follow you constantly. I also use your guided meditations from time to time (I was touched by your suggestion to contribute as much as we want for it), but honestly, I still can't meditate without effort as you always indicate. I used to practice Atma Vichara daily for more than a year, but I couldn't progress in any way on that path, so I abandoned it. Only last year, after being home following a retreat in Amsterdam (psilocybin), attending it to experience again the mystical experiences lived in meditations years before, regarding my true nature, I've been able to interrogate myself and see a clearer answer to "Who am I?", unveiling all the layers until I could explain it all in one word: "EXPERIENCING". But that feeling of contentment was short lived and didn't triggered a change in my way of living. Now, I use meditation only to cope with daily stress and I use philosophy to make a change in my way of living. In my daily reflection, I recognize that all the philosophy I practice it's far from achieving the liberation I would experience if I could embody what Ramana was explaining. But, at least practicing philosophy I can see some improvements in my way o living, even that they are just a scratch comparing with what "Who am I" answer could reveal.

    • @peter-russell
      @peter-russell 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for your comment. I’m glad you have tasted your true nature and the contentment that lies there. Indeed the root meaning of “Ananda” is “great contentment.” I know how much we can want to get back to experience these states again, but paradoxically the wanting can often get in the way. We drop into our true nature when we are fully relaxed and not trying to get anywhere. So the wanting can disturb that, and take away from the effortlessness I encourage. During your meditation, when you notice some slight trying or effort has crept in, see if there is any faint mental tension associated with it. If so, let it soften and relax. This will help you drop back closer to the ease of your true nature. The key is letting the attention itself relax. I describe this more in another of my Mindfulness of Being talks - ua-cam.com/video/djyD5rn8Ujk/v-deo.html It is also important to recognize that the answer to “Who am I?” does not come as an understanding, or philosophical realization. It is a discovery of what was always there, but not recognized because it was veiled by the thinking mind. So don’t go looking for some new experience or insight, it is more about noticing how it is for you when the thinking mind falls silent (or at least quietens down a lot). The contentment you felt is an intrinsic part of it.

    Ah, now all of your other videos make sense . without going into the possible motivation for this video , i will get to the point with , oaths to spiritual teachers or what ever the Maharishi is is to you encompass not only the specifics and mechanics of the teaching involving mantras and their use but also the organization that was created to disseminate the procedure/ technique . i'm also a teacher of Tm from the early seventies and at no time did i adore the organizational side of it but i did tow the party line because of my promise to Maharishi . i am a firm believer that these organizations eventually implode when the living example of that which is awake to itself leaves their physical body. this is inevitable . i'm a rebel at heart and i did get into some scuffles with a few big headed power types but did or said nothing against the bureaucracy as i felt the technique was too valuable to go astray to the extent that the effectiveness would be lost sooner than later . also i have never found another meditation that could claim there system had the ability to transcend its own activity , so necessary in establishing effortlessness . BTY were you tossed out at the six month course in Arosa Switzerland ?

    • @peter-russell
      @peter-russell 3 місяці тому

      I'm glad this video answers some of your earlier comments, and gives you a better idea of where I stand in regard to TM. It is, in my opinion, the most direct path, and MMY's teachings are profound. No I wasn't tossed out of Arosa. But it was around that time that some in the UK began to question my fidelity. I had been on the board of SRM in UK, and had run SIMS, so it was a big deal to them. It was hard balancing my high regard for TM with my own integrity.

    • @siriosstar4789
      @siriosstar4789 3 місяці тому

      i read an article you wrote giving more detail as to why you were asked to leave the organization . it seems pretty straight forward based on that info . the Maharishi wanted to switch his message from the spiritual bent to one that a western mind might see as more palatable . Charlie Lutes went through something similar , being the head of the SRM . I also was more drawn to spiritual vernacular but it wasn't a deal breaker for me because maharishi confided in us that it was a spiritual practice in its depths but if we wanted to reach greater numbers in the west then we were to change the wording to suit the circumstances . it wasn't the wording anyway that mattered but the realization of that which is awake to itself as the dominate identity . the wording or message was only important to those that needed an intellectual reason to begin the practice . he told us the people will realize who and what they are regardless of the wording describing the practice . however, in the selling of any product or teaching , consistency in messaging becomes paramount for increasing sales .😂 Maharishi decided on a new message/ wording and because we were employees ,we were expected to follow the rules of the company . if that was a problem for some then they went out on their own . the organization may have done you a favor so you could speak in a way that was more in tune with what you felt , so it seems to have all worked out for the best .🙏

    oh man , Tm stolen . this is Tm without the mantra. Most of what is being said here is a combination of TM and Advidya , specifically that coming from Papaji and or Gangaji. These two seemingly different approaches are actually highly compatible as they both provide the two essential ingredients for successful mediation and or the sate of effortlessness that is consciousness awake to itself or Being . Tm mostly focuses on the necessity of a system to transcend its own activity to avoid the practice being stolen by the mind and the advaita reality of Transmission . Transmission is that which occurs when a person that is fully identified with that which is awake to itself , simultaneously directs their mind and senses onto anther individual in close proximity ( not always necessary but mostly ). what occurs is a kind of movement of pure awareness to the same pure awareness that is the other individual . a sort of movement of that which doesn't move , from Here to Here . what is being presented here is a watered down version of both methods . Tm without the non meaning mantra and its ability to transcend its own activity is not TM and attempting effortless meditation without a direct experience of effortlessness will become just another mental activity ,no matter how well it is disguised in the form of " using one's awareness to create effortlessness ". that IS a mental instruction which results in directed thinking .

      The standard metaphysical answer of course is that we are each the light of pure consciousness shining through this nervous system into the world, and taking on an individual sense of "me-ness". But I have never been happy with that. Partly it is too conceptual. And doesn't lead me anywhere. I have often pondered a slight variation of this. What if another egg got fertilised in my mother's womb, but with same genetic make-up. This body would no longer exist. Would this "I" have never existed? Leaving aside notions of soul and reincarnation, I find that sinking myself in this question brings it much closer to home.

    Thank you Peter. There is a freedom here. It's not the freedom to make ourselves match some notion of perfection. This pot- without the strain or effort to be more or better than this indefinable clay is free to move about - without the conflict of feeling defective or incompetent. Also, diversity of forms can't be the reality because they are constantly changing; the clay that turned to the shape of pots were false appearances... it doesn't matter what pots look like we know it's clay. The appearance isn't the reality; the clay is. And how can the clay of existence be imperfect? This point of view may not help escape the apparent sorrows and difficulties of life, but it ends the delusion that there is someone, some separate individual here that understands and is directing existence. Clay exhibits no observable goal other than expressing itself in unique ways; it's all un-form and seems to disappear at some point. Likewise in nature, no two things appear the exact same. No two bodies, to two trees... no two anything. The Mystery of It!
